lots of things are going wrong, for instance, some files are corupted, firefox's security is disabled, the volume menu wont work, it just opens up a command prompt that says sndvol32.exe then closes. I recently installed firefox 3 beta, but i did a system restore and it still didnt work, im running a virus scan right now, and i cant start open office.

I would run a registry cleaner, then I would run an Anti-Spyware program to clean your registry of bogus entries. If your system restore failed, you can always un-install and re-install your applications, Firefox, Open Office, etc.
Don't bother taking your computer to a store as the person above suggested, at least not a big-box retail outlet. They couldn't fix a toaster. Find someone local to have a look and give you an estimate before you shell out the bucks.

sounds like maybe someone hacked into your system,dissabled things to allow viruses to get through.
At any rate definatly sounds like you have a few viruses going on. take it to a computer shop and ask them to clean it out for you - just describe to them what you described to us.
It shouldnt take them that long to do it.
