Going wireless doesn't in sense make your computer more suceptible to viruses. It does increase the possibility, if you are not using a secure password on your network, of someone tapping into your network or trying to access your computer for data. In most college student neighborhoods, one can find around 3 to 4 dozen wireless networks, 1/2 of which are not secure. No password needed. Use the strongest for of security your wireless router has (WEP is easy to access), and make sure you are using a firewall and you should be fine. If you are worried about viruses, make sure your anti-virus software is up to date.

Having a wireless network doesn't make you more prone to viruses. Viruses come in downloads and emails and sometimes bad websites if you use a bad browser. It potentially makes you more vulnerable to hacking via wifi but that's not common and kind of a bogeyman. If being hacked were at all likely, the router actually makes you less vulnerable to hacking from over the internet.
